Understanding Your Registry Level

When you join the Registry, you are assigned a level on Maine's Career Lattice. Your level is a professional marker — it reflects the education, training, and years of experience you bring to your work, and it's recognized across Maine's early childhood system. This page explains how your level is determined, what it connects to, and how you move up over time.

What is the Career Lattice?

The Career Lattice is Maine's framework for early childhood careers — a tiered system that recognizes both your education and your years of experience. It's called a lattice rather than a ladder on purpose: there's more than one way up, and progress in different directions all counts.Your place on the lattice is your Registry level. As your experience grows and your education and training build, your level moves with you.

How Your Level is Determined

When you apply to the Registry, your level is calculated from four things you bring to the field:

  • Work History

Your years of experience in early care and education.

  • Education

    Degrees and college coursework.

  • Training

    Professional development you've completed.

  • Credentials

Maine Credentials and other professional certifications.

What Career Lattice is For You?

Maine maintains five Career Lattices, so your level reflects the setting where you actually work. When you apply, you are placed on the lattice that fits your role. If your work changes, your lattice can change with it.

  • Direct Care

Direct Care — educators working directly with children in child care and early learning programs.

  • Administration & Management

Administration & Management — directors, owners, and program administrators.

  • Public School

Public School — educators in public school settings.

  • Family Education & Support

Family Education & Support — professionals supporting families.

  • License Exempt

    License Exempt — license-exempt providers.
