Where You are on Your Pathway
If you have been working in a licensed early childhood program, you are already on the pathway. The question is whether your professional record fully reflects your experience — and what your next step looks like from here.
Your Registry Status
The Maine Roads to Quality Registry is Maine's official professional record for ECE practitioners. Your Registry level is determined by your combination of training, credentials, and experience. If you are not yet a Registry member, joining is free. If you are already a member, confirm that your training history and experience are fully and accurately documented — your level reflects what is on record.
Your Training Hours
Core Knowledge training counts toward both your Registry level and your credential eligibility. If you have completed trainings over the years, many of them may already be documented in your Professional Development Profile. Review your profile to see where you stand and identify what you still need to move forward.
Your Direct Care Credential
A Direct Care Credential is the formal recognition that your years of experience and training have been building toward. It is the State of Maine's official acknowledgment of your professional expertise — and it opens the door to a higher Registry level and increased monthly income through the State of Maine's Early Childhood Educator Workforce Salary Supplement System.There are several routes to earning a credential — including a supported credential cohort where you work through the portfolio process alongside other providers. Your Specialist Credential
If you have already earned a Direct Care Credential and are ready to take the next step, MRTQ PDN offers a range of Leadership and Specialist Credentials that recognize advanced expertise in program leadership, technical assistance, inclusive practice, and family child care. These credentials represent the next stage of professional growth for providers who are ready to deepen their impact and expand their role in the field.
Pursuing a Degree
A college degree in early childhood education or a related field is another way to advance on the career pathway. Degrees are recognized by the Maine Roads to Quality Registry and count toward your career lattice level. If you are considering pursuing a degree, the TEACH Early Childhood Maine Scholarship Program may be able to help. Funded in part by MRTQ PDN and the Maine Office of Child and Family Services, TEACH offers scholarships for educators working in licensed child care centers or family child care programs who are enrolled in an ECE associate's degree program. Eligible providers must live and work in Maine and hold a high school diploma or GED.
What Comes Next?
The pathway does not stop at your first credential. Once you have established your foundation the next stages open up — deepening your expertise, expanding into new settings, or eventually moving into leadership and mentorship. You are at the beginning of something with a real future.
